The formal report is going well. I found an adequate amount of information regarding my topic. There were a variety of things that I didn’t know about Walgreens before conducting my research. Walgreens had restruants! A pharmaceutical company once had a chain of restaurants. That is the beauty of orchestrating a research paper or just research in general obtaining new information.

I have utilized our workshop week conducting the method that I used in the paper and applied it to other companies to if it applied to all successful or upcoming businesses. Which proved that the method applied in my research is reliable.

Blog #8 First Presentation

To begin with, my first presentation ever was a classroom presentation. Funny thing is, I remember it like it was yesterday. This is one of the moments in my life that I will never forget. I knew this topic like the back of my hand. It was a communications class, the professor told us that it had to be an informative speech and it had to be 7-10 minutes long. When I heard those words blatantly come out of the professor’s mouth all I did was cringe. It felt as if someone had punched me in the stomach. Instantaneously I became nervous and we haven’t even gotten into the end of the syllabus.

However, no matter how nervous I was, I simply told myself that I’m going to get through this without a problem (yeah.. right). The presentation deadline wasn’t until  after a month syllabus week. For a week straight I was contemplating on what to do my speech on. I wanted to be professional and do something that would impressive and definitely something I wouldn’t mess up on. I didn’t want to be someone who did an informative speech on “how to make a pizza” or “how our school got founded.” There’s nothing wrong with those topics, but I just believed I could come up with something quite relatable and some knowledge that we use in everyday life.

Furthermore, that is when I thought to myself and said “maybe I should do something that I know a lot of information about and something that I love,” and that’s when it hit me, cars! Then, all I had to do was narrow the topic down. From there thoughts were flowing into my head profusely with no intentions of halting. I began to write topics that I could use on my phone. Everything froze after my 7th topic. “People use cars every day and I can bet any amount of money that they don’t know how their engine works,” I said to myself , continuing, “I bet they don’t even know the science behind a car turning on by just twisting the key in the ignition.” I decided to my presentation on ‘How a Gasoline Engine Works in Car.’ I practiced in front of the mirror at least 17 times two weeks before.

The day had finally came. I was confident, I knew the topic in and out and that’s all that mattered. Although I knew the topic I was still nervous. I couldn’t figure out why, even up until this day I still don’t know why I was so nervous. It was my turn to present and within 7 minutes of the presentation I covered every aspect of this topic. All in the end, ironically,  it turned out that I had the best presentation in that class. Nonetheless, until this day, I still become nervous from time to time but it may come from lack of preparation I am still not sure.

Yes, it’s true we all do have a process when writing. However, everything varies depending on the type of paper that is being written, whether the paper is informative, persuasive, analytical, etc. In essence, I look at the bigger picture. I begin to brainstorm and throw everything on a sheet of paper even if the idea is strong or week. I don’t worry about grammar or proofreading until the very end of the paper.

Obviously, there is revision which includes four steps which are, “add, rearrange, remove and replace.” Moreover, I begin to free write and then later I begin to pick and choose to see what belongs in my paper and what doesn’t. These are the strategies that I find most effecient and effective.

To begin with I wanted to choose Walgreens to be the topic of my paper. The reason I chose Walgreens is because there are many examples that I extrapolate from this research. Not only can I do that, I can also tie this successful company into this book that I have recently finished. Using the leadership example that Charles R. Walgreen III have conducted throughout the years that he has been working within the company. He has been labeled on of the most iconic people in history. They were on the brink of losing Walgreens as a company but he turned it all around.

What can I say? I’m enthusiastic about this class. This is the type of class where it is easy to communicate with the teacher. Actually prepares you for real life situations in the work place. There is no doubt in my mind if I format a cover letter and a resume properly I can get the job and or internship I am applying for. Also, telecommuting! A topic we commonly make mistakes on such as emails. Emails are something we are sending out every day and at times we aren’t to attentive to the format. Writing these letters seem crucial, regarding the knowledge we will obtain from them. I’m not nervous at all because we receive feedback and we can continue to edit and revise them until they are up to par. Thank god for  professor Dreste. Can’t wait to see the grade I got on my resume!

To begin with I’ve decided to take a real estate class in the summer. It just seems to me like the perfect time to jump into the real estate market. It’s a good market for buyers at the moment. Obviously, the agents are the ones selling the houses, meaning they are making a high rate of revenue. Nevertheless, whether working for an agency or owning your own means a lot of paper work. In addition to owning your own agency means a lot more paper work for you in the beginning until you rake in enough revenue to hire someone in human resource management. However, before taking the course I would like to intern with agents who are highly experienced. Even if it’s for free, I wouldn’t mind whatsoever because what I am obtaining can’t be bought; which is experience. There is 168 hours in a week I can dedicate at least 15 hours a week to this.

Afterwards, expanding to different fields of real estate seems like the way to go. No matter if it’s commercial, luxury homes or even dealing with section 8. Experience is priceless. Consequently, there is a lot of analyzing that needs to be done, demographically and statistically. That is the only way these homes are going to be sold. Overall, I strongly feel like this class is helping me get steps closer to my goal.

A few weeks ago I came across the correct way on approaching a resume and it has been quite helpful thanks to our professor’s power points. I used these techniques that we learned on a resume to subcontract with Pepsi. Of course before sending the resume I carefully scrutinized the paper, repeatedly. In addition, I focused on the audience and made the resume adapt to their company requirements. Overall, I am eternally grateful that we covered resumes in this particular class. However, the resume that we handed in class doesn’t cut close to the one I prepared for Pepsi. Although I had to come in for an interview I believe that the resume was an abundant amount of help.

In essence, throughout this class I obtained the knowledge, that it is important to use a cover letter for your resume! This can not be stressed enough. It’s what separates your resume for the rest . You have a chance to elaborate and further the conversation without you actually having to be present. A cover letter is an attention grabber of sorts. It’s usually just a page what kind of makes it difficult to elaborate on which is why you should condense it and focus on what that company wants.
